Nā Hale O Maui, a community land trust (CLT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, and was founded by a group of private citizens in 2006. Private donations and County of Maui Affordable Housing Fund grants allowed the organization to grow and become a nonprofit housing developer of single family homes.
More than 100 Maui residents have joined and contributed to the organization with the goal: "To secure and preserve a permanent supply of affordable housing alternatives for low and moderate income households in Maui County.".
Nā Hale O Maui uses the community land trust model of sustainable leasehold to keep the home affordable in perpetuity. Nā Hale O Maui owns the land, and the homeowner owns the improvements built on the land. The Ground Lease contains a resale provision that provides for future affordability.
More than 30 low and moderate income households on Maui are now homeowners of detached single family homes as a result of the years of dedicated work by Nā Hale's volunteers and staff. Many of Nā Hale's homeowners are young families with children.
Public-private partnerships have been very successful when nonprofit housing developers and local governments work together to provide affordable housing to low and moderate income families. The County of Maui and Nā Hale O Maui have partnered on several projects on Maui.

Affordable housing on Maui is still high on the list of citizen concerns. The past drop in real estate values has helped make homes for Maui's workforce more affordable. However, most families are still priced out of the single family home market, and the median sale price is rising again.
NHOM received $3,000,000 in 2010 from the HUD Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) to purchase and rehabilitate abandoned foreclosed homes for resale to income qualified families earning no more than 140% of area median income as community land trust homes. We also have received Project Grant funding from the County of Maui Affordable Housing Fund. To date we have acquired, rehabilitated and sold 32 desirable single family homes, and 1 more in final stages of being rehabilitated at this time. One new home is under construction in Waikapu.
